transfer files between hard drives

hi,

i have two hard drives right now, a C drive (16GB) where the windows system is installed and a secondary drive, 40GB. I just got a new hard drive (160GB) to replace the 40GB drive. What is the best way to transfer my files from the 40GB one to the 160GB one? I mean, I can burn everything on CD and then load it back to the 160GB but that would be very time-consuming....

thanks for any help offered!!!

klyap

Welcome to TechIMO!!

If you can make the 160 a secondary slave then you should be able to just use explorer to transfer over.

more on transfer files between drives

thanks bill for your suggestion....but the 40GB that i am transferring from....is the secondary slave drive now.....

earlier, i was planning to move everything first to my C drive but my C drive has a 16GB limit and most has been taken up by my windows/office etc....

u think i can make another secondary slave drive...that means, i have a C drive and two secondary slave drives, a 40GB and a 160GB drive?

appreciate your response!

Little confused here.

What I'm looking at is that your:

primary master is your 16

primary slave is your 40

and

your secondary master is your CD.

Do you have any other IDE devices hooked up to your system?

hi again bill.....

sorry about the confusion...i am really quite new to all this...I am not sure if i have a primary master, primary slave or secondary master....and don't really know what is IDE???

but i have 3 physical drives and these are the specs.....

C Drive (16GB)
System reboot from C, windows installed on C drive

D Drive (CD-RW)

E Drive (40GB, my other hard drive)

i have looked thru the net and came across something about setting up a primary master, primary slave and secondary master etc....

since my desktop has 3 bays, one for the C Drive (3 1/2in), one for the CD-RW and a 5 1/4 in bay for the second hard drive (E drive, 40GB)....naturally, i can't have a 3rd hard drive installed, but maybe i can just hook it up for the file transfer, can i?

i really appreciate your help, bill....thanks a bunch!

Just hook it up a a secondary slave on the 2nd IDE channel (making the 120 drive F) till you get everything moved over, then replace the 40,if that's what you are going to do.

ok what you do is unplug the cd-rom and replace it with the 160GB hard drive (temporarily) until you transfer all the stuff.

if your 160 is a wd and you got the disk with it, install the data lifeguard program.
take your cd player out after that and install the new drive in its place.
format new drive and transfer data from 40gb using data lifeguard.

He's only got 3 IDE devices,so it is simpler just to slave it as #4,and do the transfer.Either way will work though.
