avi and mpg

hi i downloaded some avi song clips. i want to convert it to mpeg

what progarm can i use and will there be quality improvements

if converting to mpeg

and after i convert it i want to put it on dvd or maybe cd

how wil i do it. cause when i go to nero and select dvd. there is 2 folders video_vts folder adn audio folder.

do i just drag the mpegs to the video ts folder in nero and burn

Ive found a few programs that do it... and do it well yet... they are all trail versions. ugg.
