Setting up a lan with adsl.

I have a home lan with my XP machine as the server and my kids win98 machine connected via a lan card and cross over cable. I have ICS setup so my kids can access the net.
I am getting adsl sometime in the next 10 days and was wondering what I need to do to setup adsl to share the connection with the client computer. The adsl modem has a usb port so will connect to my computer via a usb cable. Will the ICS setup on the win98 machine automatically detect the adsl connection or does it have to be setup and if so how would I do this?

As long as you have ICS set up, it should work without any other changes to the Win 98 machine. ADSL just looks like another LAN connection to the computer.

Just one piece of advice regarding the modem connection to your XP machine, if you have the option to use an NIC connection, this is highly recommended for better connection stability and speed.

Thanks for the reply Osprey.

Do you mean that I should have two nic's in my machine, one for the lan and one for the modem instead of using the USB connection? (Yes my modem does have a lan port.)
Why is this are their problems with using USB?

Yes, you'll need two NICs. This is fairly easy to do. The alternative is to use a router, which provides the additional benefit of a hardware firewall. The router acts as another computer, into which the modem is connected.

With USB, most report intermittant connection difficulties and slower speeds as compared with an NIC connection. With an NIC connection, there is no need for any drivers to be installed as there would be with USB.

Okay then, I might get another nic and set it up that way instead of using USB.

Consider getting a router as they are pretty cheap and work better than ICS. I would 2nd the recommendation on using a NIC card instead of a USB connection.

Hey,
Windows 98 is not AUTO when it comes to alot of stuff, but ADSL it should hangle quite well....Im, not sure you would have to make any changes but seeing youll be using a USB cable, which i highly DO NOT recommend on WIN98 as the others might have said, you will have some difficulties...Go with NIC, you will need two, but a router would take care of all your issues as the anove have said. Good luck

Cheers,

Greer
