How's this for Dial-Up, 20kbs

BellSouth Accelerator Technology Diagnostic Tests
02/10/2004 21:51:02 (Eastern Standard Time)

Step 4 of 8:
Determining current line speed...
Measured speed is 19.95 Kbps

Previously, at 49,333 connection rate my norm was 4.5kbs

Moved to the sticks now at 38,667 I'm showing a faster rate.

Last week I made some jpegs of my rate during a 1mb download
At 50% the rate showed 21.4kbs

What gives, does the Bellsouth "acceleration" software really compress the packets that much ?

im confused, are we talking about kilobytes here (KB) or kilobits (Kb)?

not related to the thread actually, but have you tried an external serial modem? They can often compensate for poor lines

Well, it could be that your new ISP in the sticks might have better hardware... or that your previous ISP was saturated, in contrast to where you are now. Things to consider.

Most of the "high speed" dialup solutions being offered today are only a caching engine at the ISP. They will serve up most requested pages that they have stored when people go to the site, instead of having to hit the actual site everytime.

Cisco makes some of them, I have a friend who is an engineer for them and he showed me one in a lab about a year ago.

Maybe you got on some good coppah there Doc..

Same ISP, different server host [whatever the term]

The local T3 line is NW of where I live, the server is due south, they have to tie into the T3 after I get on-line.

John P
I have some software & Hardware external modems, however with performance like this, I ain't gonna swap

The only diff is that BellSouth now has the accellerator package that they claim "compresses" the packets, hence faster through-put.

Don't know what it is, with download rates like this I'm not gonna fuss .

Doc

Good for you

I don't know if you've experienced a cable connection before, but when you do, you'll say, "Baby, where've you been all my life?!"

the fastest download I've ever had with broadband was about 500kbps!! Though usually it doesn't get over 200kbps.
