Marathon XP install
No, not the number of machines I've installed XP on...the time it's taking to install this OS on this new machine!!! It's been 4 HOURS!!! It's soooo slow! This is a Barton core, 80 gig 8mb cache 7200 rpm, ASUS mobo ( the common new one ) and 512mb of PC2700. WHY IS IT SO SLOW!!!!

Do you have the L2 cache on the processor disabled?

Cables have been checked, I didn't disable anything in the bios...autodetected the 2500+ right off the bat.
We tried different RAM, cables...ram placement ( slots )....
Is there anything in the bios that could have been set to slow down the HDD?
The only thing I can think of is that I didn't use the disc that came with the motherboard before installing the OS...Which I've never done...could it be that the lack of specific mobo drivers is slowing it down this much?
When I did the Zero write on the HDD, it seemed to go fast enough....ther just is little HDD activity per the LED...
Right now, it's sitting at "Set up will complete in approximately: 5 minutes"....it's said that for the last half an hour. This install has been going since 1pm...it is now 9:15pm. Something is terribly, terribly awry.
One other thing...when I tried installing this the other day ( with all sorts of other problems ) it went MUCH faster....it's just gotten super slow since I formatted the drive with the MAXBLAST software.... I just can't imagine there being a problem based off of that for such poor speed performance.

Oh, and I don't have an available drive to swap with at the moment..if I did, I would be doing that first.

It kinda makes me wonder how the MaxBlast Utility can format a drive so fast, when Windows takes so much longer. Maybe the shortcuts that it uses aren't really shortcuts.

Yeah.. it probably was the Maxblast software or something!
Or maybe the drive.
I don't know... sounds like HD troubles to me.!

AHA! If you can believe this........
Scott Tiger...kudos
BOTH cache's were disabled in the BIOS. The longest day has come to an end...the OS is installed and flying.
Good gravy
