power supply and hard drive issues?

Hello I have a P4 1.8ghz with 512 ram a cd burner,a dvd-rom.Next is 2 120 gig hard drives western digital.
Sound blaster audigy 2 and well a regular nvidia video card(needs upgrade).
My question is when I have 1 hard drive connected I get no high pitch sounds from the hard drive or whatever else.
As soon as I plug up the other hard drive the high pitch noises start.
I'm figuring the power supply is not strong enough.
I have a 300 watt power supply.
Do I need to change this and could it be the problem?

Thks

Is that sound coming from the new drive? Open the case and find out. If so- it could be about to go FUBAR. If the bearings are going south they whine and produce a high pitched sound.

try EACH hard drive by itself.

some power supplies do whine when they boot....I have a cheap used one that does it....I would never use it in a build though.

I think you need more than 300w for that setup.

helllo

Hi guys, They are both new hard drives and it doesn't matter which one it is , the sound happens when I have 2 plugged in on same cable.
When only one is plugged it is quiet and silent

Where should I go with this?
THks

OK try putting one on one IDE and the other on the other. Just to eliminate that. But your power is starting to look suspicious.

right

I think you're right , the power supply is looking kinda suspicious.

I'll try both drives on different cables see what happens.

Thks

How can I keep them on separate cables and also keep my burner and dvd-rom going?//

You don't...this is a test...just a test to eliminate the possibles. Not everything is nailed down...you sometimes must eliminate other things before the obvious problem will show up.

guys it was the power supply any machine with 2 120's or any 2 hard drives deserves more than 400 watts.

I put in a 420 watt power supply and the 2 hard drives are on the same channel and they purr like kittens now.

Thks
