Systems Need Help Running RTCW

I just started getting involved in playing RTCW online and I'm having major problems withit moving choppy at times.

I have an ASUS A7V8X motherboard with an Athlon XP 1800+, 256MB PC2700 RAM, GeForce 2 MX400 (64MB) video card. My NVIDIA driver version is 5.2.1.6. My DirectX version is 9.0b (4.09.0000.0902).

I changed the graphics configuration to the fastest setting and I'm still always at least a step behind all the other players. I even experience choppiness when I'm not playing online, especially if there are lots of characters on the screen.

I have a broadband connection (cable) and get about 150kb/sec. and have the latest patch for RTCW.

I've heard of other people having problems running this and similar games with the same processor even when they have far better video cards.

Any suggestions. I love this game, but playing online is frustrating when my system can't keep up with the action.

Two possible problems come to mind:

You're playing the game at too high a resolution for the hardware you're using

or

The server you're playing on is experiencing lag.

I'm running 640x480 and 16bit color. I have it set to the least demanding graphics I possibly can have.

As far as server lag, pings are all under 100.

Wow.. that's about as undemanding at you can get.

Low pings are nice but a server can still get bogged down if alot of people are playing it.

Do you have this problem with every game you play or just this one? I could be you have something running in the background on your machine that's causing the problem.

As far as I understand it, hunkmegs is the amount of RAM dedicated to the game, and it can be set up to 75% of your RAM without issue.

The console command is \com hunkmegs xxwhere "xx" is the number you want to set the hunkmegs too. The console should report that the change will be made at the next restart - Try it as "hunkmeg" if it doesn't do anything, as I can't remember if there should be an "s" on the end or not.

gl..hf!!

I too have started getting back into playing RTCW online and i just downloaded RTCW Enemy Territory which is a free download for the multiplayer version. I would recommend that too.

What version of windows are you running? Is it all up to date on service packs and such? I am running XP Pro at home and i have not problems running the game at 800x600 with all the other settings at default.

Shuttle AN35N
Duron 1.6GHz
512MB PC-2100 RAM
ATI Radeon 7500 AIW 64MB
Cable Broadband connection.

MzonX,

Am I correct in saying the console command is the key to the left of the "1" key? If so, I am supposed to type in "\com hunkmegs 192"? 192 being 75% of my RAM. What is the default amount of RAM that the game uses?

blubomber,

I am running XP Home Edition.

Thanks for all your help, everyone.
