FP98: There is no server on port 80 at LocalHost

I've been running FrontPage98 for many years to manage our website.

This morning, when trying to open the local version of the website, I got the error message:

"There is no server on port 80 at 'LocalHost'".

From my limited knowledge, I thought "port 80" was the port used by HTTP traffic to and from the internet. I'm only trying to open files on my computer here.

I have no idea what this means. Any advise or suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Terry

I looked at the Personal Web Server in the Control Panel. Under SERVICES, both FTP and HTTP are STOPPED and I cannot get then started. When I click PROPERTIES on them, the root directories and home pages are all garbage. Likewise the default home page in GENERAL is garbage.

Does that have anything to do with FP?

Solution found. Or, rather, work-a-round found.

I copies the local website files from the c:\webshare\wwwroot directory to a new directory under MyDocuments and then pointed FP98 to that directory as a new but existing FP Web. I checked within FP98 and no file dates were changed. I changed one file and then published to my website. Works fine!

I assume I can get rid of the Personal Web Server binding in TCP/IP. Any objections?

I have 3 books on Front Page and a massive one on Windows 98 but none of them address this problem. So much for MS documentation.

Thanks to all who helped me out of this mess. I’ve come across this problem on a number of forums but never found a solution. Hope this helps others with the same problem.
