snail speed installations of ANYTHING

Hi guys. I just installed XP Pro and current specs are in my sig. Whenever i try to install drivers or software and it needs to make a restore point or something, it stalls for about 30 mintues then actually starts to get "working" and finishes installing. Is there any patch or something to help make this fly by faster? I have not gone to windows update yet since i still think it's just bs. After i updated to sp4 for my windows 2000, it totally got screwed up and i had to reformat the thing. So any help please? Thanks.

EDIT: will a reformat work to fix the problem or is it just part of Xp also? Thanks.

Before wiping the HD and starting over, double check BIOS settings and ensure that your CPU's L2 cache is enabled. BTW, I keep all three of our boxes updated to the very latest via Windows Update... never have had a problem.

250GB WD
2x 120GB Maxtor (both died)
Dual Psu'ing with one generic 500watter and one Antec 300watter
