My PC has nowhere near the amount of memory it should have!

Athlon XP 2800 Barton 512MB Cache
Mem 2*512Mb PC2700 DDR
HD 120Gb
Graphics GeForce4 FX5200 256MB 8X TVO DVI
Audigy 2
Win2000 Pro
Asus A7V8X-X Mobo

Hi,

I made the mistake of thinking reinstalling
win2k pro would be straight forward but keep finding new problems after reinstallation.
I just figured out how to solve a graphics driver problem I had, and now have found out on my system properties that I only have
262,664 KB of Ram when I should have 1024Mb!

Anyone have any ideas how this has happened and how to rectify it?
Very grateful for any help.

Shutdown and try reseating the RAM.

Also try Memtest86+ to test your RAM.

should I download the bootable ISO or
bootable binary from Memtest?

I'll try reseating the RAM first.

Get the binary, it should create a bootable floppy.

An update.

I downloaded the bootable binary from Memtest but didn't quite understand how it worked. So I downloaded Microsoft Windows diagnostic instead and booted with that. The tests were all good and showed no problems.

So I tried reseating the RAM

When I opened up the computer I found there was only one memory chip occupying three possible slots. When I took it out the label on it said 256Mb DDR.

Seeing as though I ordered 2*512Mb DDR memory I'm assuming this means the company I bought it from only installed 256Mb and made it look as though I was running 1024MB.

I thought I should confirm this with someone on here before I phone them up and start berating them.

Send a message via ICQ to Bullion
if they only put one stick of 256 in the computer they dudded you. Be nice it could be an honest mistake. However when the computer posts you should see how much ram is installed, surely that raised your curiosity? They cant make it look like there is 1024mb ram. They can tell you its 1024 but the post will tell you the situation

thanks for the reply.

I phoned them up and they said to send it back to them and they would send the correct RAM back.

Perhaps it was a genuine mistake, but I'm not sure.
