Kids AGP vs. VGA Which is better ?

Hello everybody I'm new here
I just slapped together a new system for my buddy. The Biostar MoBo M7VIG Pro-D came with an Integrated S3 ProSavage 8 Video 1x/ 2x/ 4x slot. It also has 3 vacant PCI slots. Other then that an AMD XP 2400+, and 128 mb of DDR ram which will have at least 512 more mb's added at the same time I fix this graphics issue. It is running on WIn XP Pro. So... gaming is very important and so is price. Do I go for an AGP or a VGA card ? I would like to get high performance and still be reasonable to his wallet....any suggestions ?
Thnx in advance !

Welcome to TechIMO!!

For gaming you will want to go with AGP by all means.

Probably something like an ATI 9600.

AGP or VGA? that doesn't make sense. did you mean to say AGP or PCI?

well I'd choose AGP of course. but vga has to do with the connection between the card and the monitor, not with what kind of video card it is.

I say go with VGA. In fact, you have to go with VGA. You do not have a choice.

VGA or AGP is not a choice. You know there's red and green applies right? You question here is the same as asking, "Do I get red, or do I get apples?"

VGA = Video Graphics Array All cards are vga.

AGP = Accelerated Graphics Port This is a type of connection between the graphics card and the motherboard. If the motherboard has an AGP type slot (which I'm certain it does) then you need an AGP video card.

So your card will be both AGP and VGA.

The board has on-board video with available PCI and AGP slots.

I was assuming the reference to "VGA" was just an oversight and was meant to be PCI as he mentioned that he had 3 vacant PCI slots open.

You say "toe-may-toe" and he said "VGA."

AGP and VGA are not comparible. But to give you an answer, video cards that work on the AGP slot have higher bandwidth than those that work on the PCI slot. I don't think high performance PCI video cards are even made anymore.

So for gaming, a high performance AGP card is desirable. However, the best cost bucks and value drops quickly. I have a GeForce2 Ultra 64MB that cost $400 when new but 18 months later was a $58 card.
