Theres a nice post on the Audio board on this exact same subject .

Anyways, are you looking for a larger based HDD mp3 player, or a smaller one? If you're looking for a smaller one, I would suggest a CreativeLab Muvo^2. It comes in a 1.4gb and 4gb version. If you want a larger mp3 player, the Creative Nomad Zen Xtra is awesome too.

I asked the same question not long ago

128/256 MB players are FLASH memory based, whereas the xxx GB players have small HD's in them... some would say to shy away from the HD based since they are more sensitive to shock
When researching you'll also want to keep an eye out for how to get the music onto the player. Some require their own software (like Dell's requires MusicMatch) while others you can just drag in like a normal drive in explorer.

I'd go for the creative nomad MuVo squared 4gb, it cost a little more than 200US and is extremly small with a large amount of space, it also has drag-and-drop connectablity making transfers easy.

I did pick up a Creative Nomad Zen Xtra (30GB) and have been quite happy with it
I think it was around 270US
