Systems "NTLDR missing" in Windows ME

Athlon XP 1700 cpu, PCChips MB, ATA 133 supported.

HDD works in other computers.
New 80 lead HDD cable
Did not format C, just installed Windows again.
A friend's computer, left plugged in 365 days.
Not quite a year old.
Bios recognized HDD, set to Auto, and User.

When I got it, Bios was reset, CPU was at 1200, reset to 1700.
Recognizes floppy and CD.
VERY ODD.

Thinks a lot.

Did you see the Blondie cartoon?
"AAAAAAHH. Get compuyer repairman here ASAP."
"He can't be there until 3:00."
"Why not?"
"That's when his mother picks him up from school."

Welcome to TechIMO. Please use the "search" feature. You should find a LOT of threads about "NTLD missing".

DID, but looks like all for NT OS, none for ME, with specific search for ME.

Okay, the down and dirty.

- Change BIOS to boot from floppy
- Boot from a 9X/Me bootdisk (get one here if you don't have one)
- At the A:\ prompt type in "FDISK /MBR"
- Take out the floppy and reboot the PC, change the BIOS to boot from the HDD

If should boot to Me

Ah, check and make sure the "Virus Protection" is "Disabled" in the BIOS as well. That will keep you from writing to the MBR.

It's always the little things. The default is usually "Enabled". Since you said the BIOS was reset, that's probably the problem.

Not in BIOS or manual to turn off.
Out of ideas.
Thanks
Could it be a hardware problem. The HDD runs in another confuser.
