1.4 Gig cd's

I was reading a CD / DVDR review that one company has the ability or program that allows you to create a regular CDR with 1.4 gigs of data doubling the capacity. It's suppose to be a pregram. Has anyone ever heard of this?

im not sure about cd-r as the max is 700 megs and allowing another 700 megs of space seems a bit impossible.

this would be big news if it was possible

Well it seems they do make 900mb CDRs although I don't know where to get them at. I've never seen a program fit 1.4 GB on a CD... unless the data is highly compressed before writing.. but its still unlikely.

The compression would be my guess
Which means getting anything off of the cd would be very slow, and would be useless if you didn't have that same software to get the data off of it.

Found:

Quote : "Sanyo introduced a new format called HD-Burn, supported by their new DVD+/-RW chip. It allows the drive to burn up 1.4GB of data using a regular 700MB blank CD-R blank. The resulting HD-Burned CD-R can only be read by supporting DVD/DVD-ROM drives and CD-ROM drives. Most DVD/DVD-ROM drives can support the format via a firmware upgrade. It's unclear how easy and how likely will it be for future drives to support this format."

Sony had a while ago tech called dd-cd, which allowed 1,3gb on dd-cd.

It never spun seriously off I guess

Believe it requires a DVD Burner... not a typical cd burner.

UM, Vass,

That is what I thought I said.
If I didnt or wasnt clear, you have to have the new DVD burner to be able to burn 1.4Gig onto PLAIN 700 MEG CD-ROMS. Its the DVD burner hardware that allows the extra information to be burned to the cd-rom disk(or disc).

Here is a short description from ZDNET:
http://zdnet.com.com/2102-1103_2-997...?tag=printthis

It is also in short supply, DONT buy it for backup unless you have another compatable unit to read from. You shuold NEVER rely on only ONE DEVICE for your backups, unless you care nothing for it(why backup then??).
