Mmmm

Are you able to do a complete virus scan? I had to do one with both BitDefender Pro and McAfee just to clean my system up.
Can you enter safe mode...F8 on boot up?
I was lucky enough to have another system that I could access the net with otherwise my system would have been toast, found it odd that one virus scan missed so much while the other could see it. Anyway like to hear what happend reguardless of what you do. Good Luck!

your best bet would be to reinstall XP again...less of a headache in the long run and probably the most expedient in your case.

It's probably norton that messed your system up!!!
So, your saying that you can't get into safe mode?
Why not?
WinXP doesn't go in it?

I found this link but it's talking about partitions and stuff.

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1027465246

So did you make any new partitions?
Also, did you tried the last known configuration?
And did you tried copying the autochk executable from the CD to the HD (in the cd I think you can find the file in i386 folder).

If you are going to reformat you may as well try the repair option in windowsXP reinstall before going that extreme?
I wonder if you might be able to boot to a command prompt and remove the virus program that might be screwing up your boot process?
Btw when you say you keep hitting F8 is this right after your bios screen info loads? Also are you holding it down a few seconds, I know sometimes my system required I hold that dang thing down till the Screen came up with the safemode options.
Just some thoughts I am sure you have tried everything, just hate to see anyone have to reformat (I hate doing it myself)!

If I'm not mistaken, I think the autochk program CAME with WINXP. I think it's the same thing as the old chckdsk command. So .. it could be that Norton System Works did something to it, or changed something.!

last resort...

That i386 folder also has a exe file that will allow you to do a manual restore, I just can't recall the name. I will do some research.
