Problems with MSI 694 Pro dualie

My beloved PIII 733Mhz dualie started rebooting spontaneously. I tried reinstalling the OS (XP Pro), but it crashes at the same point every time, just after I name the PC and set the password. I tried a new HD, I've tried 4 different RAM sticks in different slots, and I flashed the BIOS to the latest version. It still crashes at the same point. I've also tried several vid cards, both PCI and AGP. I even tried installing Windows Server 2003. It also crashes at that same point. The CPU fans are working fine and there's no heat problem that I can detect. I think it's either a non-fixable issue with the mobo, or I have a bad CPU.

Any ideas?

I hate to say this, but it's probably the capacitors. This is the EXACT same thing that happend w/ mine.

Look around the CPU's, you'll probably notice they're swolen and/or have some brown looking stuff "leaking" out of them.

I'll post the link to my other thread here in a few.

And so it begins . . .

I remember you said that and I did look around the mobo. I didn't notice any capacitor problems, but it could very well be that. If I have to, I'll buy another mobo. I want my dualie back.

I recommend a Supermicro P3TDDE

EXCELLENT replacement and you'll get to keep all your hardware.

AAAHHH!!! Just search "P3TDDE" on Price Watch

Ouch. Pricey beasts, aren't they? Oh well, it's for a good cause.

Thanks.

My dualie lives!!!!! I tried everything in the book. Replaced everything. I even closely inspected the board and found no blown capacitors. Then I disabled ACPI in the BIOS and installed from scratch. Shazaam! It worked! The only downside is now I have to manually turn off the PC after shutdown, but I rarely turn it off anyway because it's a cruncher.

One thing about us computer people. We will spend money on parts, and yet will just keep trying and trying until something works, albeit halfway, just to save a few extra bucks.

Glad you got it working again!

Keep crunching!!

I hate to be the negative one here, but I would say this is just a temporary fix. I would imagine the caps are bad on your voltage regulator circuit and they just haven't shown the signs yet.

Either that or your a lucky explative explative!

I normally don't buy parts, especially mobos unless I have to.

I am still running an old Shuttle AK31 v.1 mobo that only will start up if when you turn it on, you hit the reset button right after that. And, then sometimes it gives me "No system disk found" errors. Of course, that's only one of 8 computers, so even if that one would 'go out' I have some backups...

Likewise with me. This PC is one of three in my office and one of 5 in the house. Plus I just bought the makings for a new P4 from Omardeth. Still, this dualie has been with me a long time. And with triple 19" monitors and a sweet sound system, it was my favorite.

I hope you're wrong, ER, but I'll keep a weather eye out for trouble anyway.
