Systems UNSUCCESSFUL SHUTDOWNS

I have a problem with a few of our workstations running Windows 98se - IT WON'T SHUTDOWN PROPERLY! I have already installed in each PC the Microsoft Shutdown Supplement file. I even tried tweaking some BIOS settings and the like as recommended by Microsoft Knowledge Base Article -238096. But it still it does not solve the problem. However, one more thing that I have not tried yet is discovering whether a TSR (terminate-and-stay-resident) program is the cause of the problem. And so I need some tips on how to set TSR programs in such a manner that it will close correctly especially during shutdown. Do I have to add something in my config.sys or what?

Also I have observed that those PCs which are having shutdown problems are the ones with high capacity drives (20GB & 40GB).
Those with 8MB and lower have no difficulty in shutting down.

Is ACPI enabled in bios? And in windows? Also TSR programs can be found by CTRL+ALT+DEL then shut off all but Explorer and systray (ANY OS BUT XP). You now have NO programs running EXCEPT for windows OS. If still dont shut down properly it certainly isnt a proggy doing it.

There's also a patch for IDE Hard Drive cache or something to that effect. You might wanna try it as well. I'd d/l all the patches if it were me.

Are these on a LAN? Mapped Network Drive? If so, there's a patch for that as well.

besides the ide patch that evilrick refers to, there is also an option in msconfig to disable fast shutdown. check that as well.

btw, how long are the machines running before you shut them down? win98 was notorious for memory corruption/leaks on machines which are heavily used on, when they're not rebooted every ~48 hrs.
