VCR - Computer Problem

I'm trying to hook my VCR up to my computer to put some VHS videos on it. I have everything hooked up properly, the VCR is hooked up to the computer through my video card using the av cable thing. The problem is my computer doesnt seem to acknowledge that i have the VCR hooked up, all my video capturing programs tell me there is no device hooked up to my computer. Is there something in particular that I must do to have my computer acknowledge the VCR?

Quick questions: What video card do you have, and what kind of connection are you using, the S-Video, or composite RCA?
