Sound card and speakers?

Was in the market place to buy a new sound card so I can get surround sound. But I just found out my motherboard has it built into the board. I have a Nforce 2 mobo (Winfast K7NCR18D-Pro)with a MCP-T southbridge which is capable of producing Dolby Digital. It came with a SPDIF output connector. Ok this is where I am lost. I do have a set of speakers + a sub. What is this SPDIF for? Could I just add a couple more speakers to my allready existing ones or would I have to buy a whole new set?

I have the Logitech 2.1 speakers.. have had them for about a year now and they are great! so I am sure the 4.1 must be good as well.

If you are looking for the best sound quallity for not spening 1000+$ then get a receiver (Prefably a yamaha) Get some good book shelf or floor speakers from best buy or a audio store. Get some smaller rear speakers ((maker sure the brand of speakers are the same!!!!)). Get a nice sub thats big enough to shake you. Get a center. and you are READY. Hook the receiver up to the sound card via SPDIF and you can now watch dolby digital through your receiver. I did this in under 500$ It is way better then buying a speaker package.
