Outlook pain in the butt

I have Compuserve, which is dial up, now owned by AOL but I plan on getting rid of it soon. But for now, I have a problem. I have an e-mail account at athlonxp.com and everything is set up right for the POP3 incoming e-mail. The question is I have trouble every now and then trying to send e-mail out from the SMTP server, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. I have figured it out that it is resultant of the IP address each time I log on to the internet. Does anyone know the answer since Compuserve and Outlook's help are less than helpful?

Thanks

The only thing I recommend is to find out what DNS name your out going address is. Like my outgoing is mail.softhome.net (free e-mail account I have). Sometimes the outgoing have a security authentication, sometimes they don't depends on how they set the server up. Check to see what the outgoing DNS name is, not IP address. The IP should matter bucase the DNS name should remain the same. Their server should translate the DNS name to IP address.

I have outlook 2003 now and some issues I had with XP 2003 fixed many of those issues.

Some ISPs will allow any POP3 server for your incoming, but you must use your ISPs SMTP for outgoing. Your setup may need to look something like this:

POP3: pop.athlonxp.com
SMTP: smtp.compuserve.com

Sorry, I ave the smtp, which is whta Judas has typed out, but sometimes it'll send e-mails out, sometimes it won't. Outlook keeps telling me to contact my ISP. I don't know if I'm making much sense right now.

This the error I get
Quote:

Task 'mail.athlonxp.com - Sending' reported error (0x800CCC78) : 'Unable to send the message. Please verify the e-mail address in your account properties. The server responded: 550 ACCESS DENIED'

contact your ISP or go to your ISP webpage on e-mail setup and find out what your SMTP settings should be for your outgoing mail. I remember I was a college, then I graduated. My imcoming for college stayed the same, however I had to change the SMTP to my ISP, once I did that it worked perfect every time. Once you put those settings in see if it works. If it does, close outlook then reopen it and recheck to see if it has saved your settings. If not, a reinstallation of outlook may be in order.

Yes, I think this is an ISP problem. For some reason, any delay to get to the SMTP server can sometimes trigger a connection refusal by that server. I don't use Outlook anymore for different reasons, but I do not believe this has to do with Outlook per se.

I don't know, I might look into Eudora? Anyone know if Eudora has this problem or is it Compuserve (AOL) problem?

Thanks for the replies

If you want to try a really good free email client & Spam remover , this is very good .

I can look at my mail on the ISP's server , delete ( spam removal ) , reply , click on links & if I want it on my comp , click on Move to > Archive .
Use right click for some of the functions .

You can still leave any other email client installed . Just a matter of choosing which one you want as default .
