this may sound like a silly question........my sis just bought a new system (tower) amd athlon 2400xp, Asus, Via kt400-333. She is having a lot of problems. Neither of us know XP very well...is it possible to change the os to ME?
The problems started as soon as we visited the WEB, when we tried to set up her new broadbamd account, the lady on the line told us we had the Blaster Worm and told us how to fix it, after we did we had loads od trouble trying to install virus protection, firewalls etc.
We did a clean install on xp and started again...........she rang me tonight with more problems.........help is needed PLEASE!!!!!

Hi,
Did you try to use the system restore feature in XP? It can revert back to the point of time where you know the system was working and then you can figure it out from there.
I had the same problem as you had, but with my brother and sister's computer. They keep on messing it up. I tried XP, Me and 98. Trust me, DON"T USE ME OR 98!! lol.. I was like I were reinstalling their OS every week!
I ended up buying SuSE Linux Personal from compusa and thier systems have been running stable since I receommend a Linux approach if she doesn't use anything that "requires" windows.

Stick with XP.

You probably did have the blaster worm.

Thats where "who you bought it from" makes a big difference..thats why when I sell a system they wont get the blaster worm, lol.

But I would stick with XP anyway....sorry to see you having problems though.....sometimes you need a friend who is good with computers to help you get going.

What you need to do is download the blaster patch to a floppy....reload xp....load drivers...load blaster patch BEFORE goign online...when you do go online go straight to microsoft and do all the security updates etc.

Then install adaware (get the free version, from www.lavasoftusa.com ) updtate that and then run it to get rid of the spyware junk.

Then if you are confident enough....do the microsoft xp srvices config at www.blackviper.com I use the 'safe' configuration except I leave the system restore set to 'auto'

ok, I'll stay with xp. Her son was playing a star wars game yesterday, today he can't play at all, it doesn't recognise his graphics card ??? She tried to reinstall the graphics card and it won't. I had the same problem trying to install things the other day...before we did the clean install, looks like its doing the same again????? terribly confused Janny

If you reinstalled just windows xp then it's using basic drivers. If you have a few cds that came with the system look for the drivers cd. Install video drivers off of it.

One thing you have to make sure is that if you had the Blastervirus make sure that is is aboluately off the system. Rerun the checker if you have to.

If you just reinstalled XP fresh. Get all the updates from windows update first. Then, Get graphics, sound etc. What kind of video card do you have, ati www.ati.com or nvidia www.nvidia.com. Usually you just go stright to the device manufacturer and download the drivers straight from them.

lavasoft ad-aware is just one piece. I also recommend you getting SpyBOT Search & Destroy, search for that in yahoo or goodle whichever you use and update both programs and run them periodically. Sometimes updating drivers helps remove and/or replace the corrupt ones.
