what do you think of Openoffice

Should I download it?
Is it any good?
Does it stack up well against Office/Wordperfect?

I'm a poor student not willing to spend the money, just using Wordpad right now

Oh, I feel your pain.

The word editor is every beit as capable as Word 97, and has several features of 2000. Much worth the downlaod for the Word Processor alone.

The Spreadsheet is equally good.

The Powerpoint is basically Powerpoint 97 but without any templates or pictures. Not incredibly useful unless you can get some from online somewhere.

So if you are tired of Wordpad, GET IT! It's a huge improvement over wordpad.

ITS FREE.
Its not as good as office, but its damn close. If you really want to make good documents learn to use latex (pronounced la-tech) Its a markup language, that is freely available, it has a steep learning curve but is very powerful. It is commonly used for scientific documents, thesis etc. Im beginning to learn it after years of my brother saying "learn latex" . MiKtex is the windows version.

I wouldn't need to use the powerpoint, as I can use that one at school. But I would definately love something better than Wordpad for home.

Great for free.. but its far from MS Office.
What I hate about it most is not being able to save microsoft word documents, it can only read them

Aside from MS Office it would definately be my first suggestion.

I believe star office can, but probably not by the latest word documents like from office 2003 or xp, I use office 2003 and am liking it, but I still use star office 7 on linux.
