can't connect to wireless network

Hi i just bought 2 new Wireless G notebook adapters and a Wireless VPN Rourter... Model = Linksys WPC54G (notebook adapters) and WRV54G (router).

I have installed the router to connect to the internet via my SBC DSL PPPoE connection and wired it to my home computer. I also installed both of the notebook adapters onto 2 notebooks that I have, the first is an HP and that seems to be working fine. The other is a Compaq presario 2800.

The problem is that it wont allow me to connect to ther internet. It shows me as connected to the wireless network but i cant connect to the net. and i took the same procedures as I did on the other laptop, which was just insert the card.

One thing i noticed was that on the Compaq Laptop, the IP asseigned to it is in the 169.254.X.X range and the subnet mask is 255.255.0.0, while on the home computer and the other functional laptop, its 192.168.1.X and the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0

all computers and the router are set for DHCP.

any suggestions?

thanks!

The 169.254.x.x is what MS assigns you when it can't find the DHCP server. That laptop isn't talking to the router. Did the wireless NIC come with drivers?

yes I installed it. I even just re installed it and it shoes up in the Device manager as "Wireless-G notebook adapter" but im still getting the 169.254.X.X

if im not connected then why does it recognize my SSID? and ask me to connect to that one.

I don't know anything about networking, but is it possible to share a dial up connection with a wireless 802.11b kit? If not does anybody have an idea on what to use thats not too expensive....

Are you using the Linksys software or Windows' default networking?

have you used the Internet connection wizard on the laptop?

I had a similar problem with Windows XP sometime ago that I couldnt access the internet from one network card and only from the wireless.... I run that wizard and it solved the problem...

OK it was a winsock issue. there was some corruption so I just download a small fix-it ultility called winsockFix for Windows XP and ran it, restarted the computer and everything works well now!

1 more question, how do I make this wireless connection secure, because when I connected to my new wireless network, windows detected my neighbors connection and i was able to connect through theirs. I dont want people to be able to connect through mine.

thanks!
