Systems TOUCHPAD Too Sensitive --or What?

I recently purchased a Toshiba midrange Laptop rom CompUSA, with a 3 year walk warrentee.

The Touchpad is causing me trouble. I THINK it's the touchpad but I am not entirely sure.

This is the 3rd Lappy I've owned, but the privious ones were --well mqany years ago.

Here's what happens.

I use the TP to move curser. I may have to go back to TP a 2nd or 3rd time to move it to where I'm going.

Here's the BIG problem. It often reads the second or third touch NOT as just a curser move, but as a Left Click. This cause al kinds of ificulties sometimes, if for example the curser is in a leter or radio tab or anaything.

Also, I get Video artifacts like lines of Text being darkened in, as if I had clicked on it.

Sometimes -and I am not entirely sure of this-text simply scrolled over (?) get darkened i.e. HIGHLIGHTED. Pehpas, even other text --but I can't be sure of this due to curser moving haphardly due to my UNFAMILIARITY with it's use.

I sometimes lapse to a "mouse mind-set" as I just got tis after many years.

I would apprecite any and all ideas.

Of course, I could brin his to COMPUSA, as it was recently puchased.

But I don't want to do this if this is simply my unfamiliarity with the Touchpad. Or just a matter of tweaking Settings. First time I'm using XP, also.

Thank you for any and al help.

Modern touchpad software reads taps as equivelent to clicks. It is important when moving to ensure that you don't tap the tochpad, but put your finger down on it, and drag with reasonable, but not large, pressure. There could be a problem that the TP is not sensitive enough or your pressure is just a little light, and it is reading as you put your finger down but not as you move it.

The touchpad software (control panel -> mouse/touchpad) shoudl allow you to turn the tap=click feature off if you don't like it. I should say false clicks are a common initial problem with touchpad use, but when you get used to this feature it revolutionizes laptop use. In many ways I now prefer a touchpad to a mouse. My advice is stick with it for a bit. If after four weeks daily use you still don't like it then turn it off, but I'll bet you don't!

Note also the edges of the touchpad correspond to scrollbars by default. All these settings can generally be customised and fine tuned as above.

Sorry if you know all this, but worth checking the basics first.

If you have the touchpad drivers installed you will be able to change all the settings for your touchpad. All lappys that ive ever seen have the ability to turn off the left click tap feature. Also, many touchpads are pressure<-->movement sensitive. Thus the harder u press the faster the cursor will go relative to the same amount of finger movement on the pad. There will probably be sensitivity settings for this as well.

I might also recommend decreasing the overall sensitivity a little bit if you feel it is moving too fast, then slowly work the sensitivity up as you get used to it
