Overclocking RAM, what kind?

Ok, I've decided on getting two sticks of 256mb for overlocking my Athlon XP 2500+ and Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe.

I'm pretty much just looking at Corsair XMS and OCZ on newegg.com

Which sticks of 256 are the best for gaming/overclocking?

I don't really know about timings all that much

and should I go higher than pc3200 if I want to overclock really high?

For the same system I chose
this corsair just because the board only has 3 slots for ram and I wanted to leave as many open as possible for the future.

How much of an overclock are you planning on doing? If you push your CPU up to 400fsb (making it a 3200+) then your ram will match it stock without any overclock since 3200 is already 400mhz.

IMO you can't really go wrong with any of those.

yeah well, i want to do dual channel, so that won't work for me. and i'm wanting to get two sticks of 256, not one stick of 512

I kind of guessed you were going to go the dual channel route
I don't know that you are going to see any difference in any of those choices. They are both good brands imo and all of them are low latency with 3.2GB/s bandwidth. I would save the 20 bucks and go with the cheaper one. The XMS Platinum LL is probably the fastest but I doubt you will see any difference except on benchmarks (possibly).

IMO, you'd be better off going with the single 512.

The performance gain you get from going dual channel is pretty insignificant... If you get 256, you're going to be limited to a MAXIMUM of 768MB of ram. I'd get the 512 now, then when you're ready, get another 512... Then you'll get dual channel and have a gig of ram, plus an extra slot left to give you a grand total of 1.5 gigs if you'd ever need it.

yeah but i've also been hearing people say that going from 512mb to 1gb is pretty insignificant as well...

especially if ill be playing games and not doing hardcore video editing and stuff.

The difference is though is that dual channel memory will never be a significant increase (on nForce2 boards)... 512 MB won't always be adequate and if you get the 512 you'll get the best of both worlds.

Either way will work, i'm just saying what i'd do and have done.

Oh, and I prefer Corsair XMS myself.
