Do you have a list of repositories defined in /etc/apt/sources.list?

If so issue apt-get update and it will update the list of available packages. If not then you will need to set up some sources to download from first That *should* have been done in the install, but it looks like you may have exited a bit early.

Go ahead and "apt-get install x-window-system", that should get you X.
If you still have problems and used the CD you can use dpkg to install the packages off of the CD.

well the problem goes on, i gave up on debian and installed mandrake, when i get to the bootloader part of the mandrake install it sys that it cant write the loader not sure why, im guessing cause the debian lilo is still in the mbr, if i format the mbr will windows still b able to boot?

cause i might have to format the mbr to get rid of lilo, but if i do that will windows b able to boot?

thx

yeah, just do fdisk /mbr and you can load windows

Regardless lilo should just overwrite that without requiring you to fdisk /mbr, there may be a bigger problem there.

There are cases when fdisk /mbr won't work though. It sometimes complains about the version number.
Maybe this is something similar. I can't remember how I solved it though, I'll try and dig it out.
