Dual Monitors - Gaming / Desktop

Is it possible to play a game on one monitor while having an active desktop on the other? When I click on this other non game monitor the game in the other monitor goes back to desktop. The whole reason i got this extra monitor was to prevent this from happening and my game from crashing. Is there anyway to prevent the game from minimizing when I click on the other desktop?

ATI Radeon 9800 PRO
single card two monitors w/ win xp

Is this possible?

Good question...perhaps you need a second video card to prevent this from happening? I dunno the relationship between a game, the video card, and the function of the monitors.

Personally, I'd love to see more games having the option of being "windowed". At the moment, I can't CTL ESC out of Battlefield 1942 and start another program because my mouse cursor doesn't show up.

Do you have ATI's Hydravision loaded? i am using two monitors at work but i dont play games. I do know that when i originaly got my ATI card to run dual monitors, it would do it but the setup would act strange until I loaded Hydravision. Then i was able to control which program went on which monitor and Hydravision keeps it that way.

Hydravision is a Free download from ATI's website.

http://www.ati.com/companyinfo/gloss...17&submit.y=10

That link will take you to the Hydravision download for the Radeon family of cards.

Yes, with Hydravision. The link that blubomber provided should work.

You can set applications to display on different monitors using Hydravision.

What games are you playing that you can get out of? There's only one game I have where the cursor will leave the game screen, even though I can see the other half of my desktop just fine.

You can with nVidia cards too. There is nView for just that. I use it to play on my tv, sometimes. I have it hooked up to my VCR then to my TV so it on "Clone" mode and Kabam! I have a monitoring system to see what my family members are doing on my computer. lol (nothing good yet)

Same as above

Hydrovision seems to wrok nicely. In Natural Selection, Haflife, Enemy Territory i can access rest of computer by getting to a menu and either moving mouse over or pressing my windows menu key then moving mouse over. in battlefiel i am able to do this same thing by alt tabbing so i guess it just takes some getting used to programs, their attitude, and the desktop resolution whil game is running.

Thanks for all the help guys!

1. make shure you've got the latest drivers (or at least some with nView)
then

Go:
Display Properties>Settings>Advanced>GeForce4TI4200(or whatever you've got>nView Display Mode>nView Modes Clone

In order for that option to appear the TV out must be hooked up to the TV, even if the TVs not on.
