I want to try linux.

Whats the best linux. I dont need the easiest just the best one there is. I mean the most stable and conpatible one. Thx.

You could try Knoppix. It is a linux distro that you run completely from a CD. Good way to try out Linux without setting up a dual boot situation on your computer.

Or, if you want to dual boot your computer or you have another computer you want to run Linux by itself on, then Mandrake is a good starting distro. I have used Mandrake up to version 9.2 and i have enjoyed it very much. I have learned alot while using Mandrake. Install and setup was easy.

So there are a couple of choices for ya.

I agree about Mandrake 9.2 - it even recognized that the sound card I was using was an old ISA one. It is also a very good intro to the world of the command line, without losing all the GUI yuminess. You will love the KDE desktop. An altogether different and more sensible computing experience, IMHO.

Anyway, the key thing is to ensure that the hardware is compatible. Look here for what works. Hope this helps.
