Systems I downloaded a virus! How do i get rid of it?!

I downloaded a virus about a month ago and I have no idea how to get rid of it. It's causing my computer, which is fairly new, to go slow and a million popups come up now when none ever did before. I don't know what the virus is called or how to find out so can someone help?

for a free scan you can go to mcafee.com (doing it myself right now)

on the right of the page is a link to a free scan.

if you don't aleady have a virus scanning program installed then you can do a free online scan here http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

then once you have found out what the virus is the website will give you steps to fixing the problem.

another suggestion is to download and install either adaware or spybot search and destroy. You might not have a virus it might just be some bad spyware

Hey Christina

Welcome to TechIMO!!

If you wish, you can also download a free virus checker
www.grisoft.de works pretty well

Also to get rid of popups and such you may have some spyware
www.lavasoft.de - AdAware ... removes all spyware crap from your machine that other applications install "For your benefit"

I scanned my computer with mcafee.com & it showed i had 25 viruses! They don't have all the viruses in their virus information library though. I have 3 Downloader -DH .b viruses, a MultiDropper- GP .a virus, 3 Downloader- FL viruses, 2 Downloader- FM viruses, 14 Downloader- ER viruses, a Proxy-Daemonize virus, and a Downloader- DH virus. If anyone knows anything about any of them please help!

I'd suggest putting up the money for some antivirus software. That way it won't happen again.

Yeah I agree. Dont waste money on Mcafee though. Go with Norton.

buying antivirus software really isn't needed AVG from grisoft works quit nicely for freebie software
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php

but I would definately recommend that you at least use something as well as using a good spyware remover. I use spybot http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download
you also need to be a little more aware of what it is your downloading, and make sure whatever programs you go with you download and install all the latest updates

Uninstall Kazza and use another file sharing program. you will have 1/10 the virus/spyware attacks.

Download and install one of the free antivirus programs, then make sure you update it with the current updates.

Also, download adaware and spybot search and destroy.

Run all 3 programs.

Sounds like you have a mix of viruses and spyware etc.

hope you get it sorted out.
