Kids installing two different hd's

my son just talked me into buying a wd raptor 10000 hd, and wd 80 gig hd, with 8 meg cash . He wants me to put os on the raptor, and use the other 80 gig for storage. Does this make sense, or did i just waste some money. Have a maxtor 40gig 7200, 2mg in my computer now, and he thinks these new hd's will speed everthing up. I do play a couple of games, (Warcraft) but nothing heavy.
And do i load my sata drivers when I reinstall win xp on my computer. Am new at this sata loading, never had one before,so this is going to be a learning expeance.
Any advice would be gratful.

Hey folks, just dug way back in the forums, somewhere around page 10 i think and found my answer....Wasnt a complete waste of money, but i think i will just go ahead and buy another raptor so I can run them in raid....

Raid 0 is the one that speeds em up...but also it makes em more susceptible to data loss..because if EITHER drive dies you lose ALL the data....so you sort of have twice the chance of losing data. So usually its just gamers that use that setup..they use it for gaming but not for holding any important data etc.

Raid 1 is the other common one, it doesnt really do much for spped though, it is just mirroring one drive on the other...redundancy basically.

If you want both 0+1 for speed and backup, you can do it with 3 drives.
I think it is RAID 5. Expensive though.
