Finance Display Problems?

I recently started having problems with my monitor. Everytime i start my computer the resolution seems to be set to some wierd res, the sides of the screen have that curve inwards thing. This also happens when i play games and even if i change it and then set it back it always goes to the curve. I have my resolution set @ 1280x1024 on almost everything including games. Also all of the sudden when i go into the settings in the display it has the option to set my resolution to 2048x5036, before my the only settings it had were up to 1600x1200. if it helps im using windows xp pro and have a radeon 9700pro with the catalyst 4.1 drivers. This stared before i had the 4.1 drivers and i updated in hopes of fixing it.
Thanks in advance

And also i totaly agree with this post New ATI catylist drivers IMO &q.. about the 4.1 drivers...they are mad wack im going to kill the person @ ati who thought of releasing these drivers as they just ruin your life... Thanks anyway

Could it be that the monitor is going bad? I have seen some that do totally wacky stuff when they are dieing.

Does your ATI card have a utility comparable to nVidia's refresh rate fix? It may that you need to manually select what refresh rate to use at a given resolution. When the monitor view does go bad, do you have an OSD that will let you see what the refresh rate is currently at? Is it at the refresh rate which you had set for that resolution? I agree with Tony... the monitor may be suspect. Can you borrow another monitor and see if the problems persist?
