User "" ?!?

I'm trying to run the install.sh for Opera through terminal and I get this:

User "" does not have write access to /etc
System wide configuration files:
/etc/opera6rc
/etc/opera6rc.fixed
were not installed
./install.sh: line 1351: /usr/lib/menu/opera: Permission denied
chmod: cannot access `/usr/lib/menu/opera': No such file or directory
cp: cannot create regular file `/usr/share/icons/opera.png': Permission denied
cp: cannot create regular file `/usr/share/icons/mini/opera.png': Permission denied
cp: cannot create regular file `/usr/share/icons/large/opera.png': Permission denied

If I SU, it won't even let me see install.sh.

I'm guessing that there's supposed to be an actual username between the ""s. Any ideas?

I tried to copy the tar.gz into the /usr directory and then I couldn't untar it. That could be my fault though.

It is.

I gave up on that. Even when I expand it with Knoquerer and try to run it there it won't work. Whatever.

Did you download it as a user?

do a ls -la on the directory to see who the owner is

if you downloaded it as root, you may not be able to touch it with a normal user as root will 'own' the file.
I run into this a lot when I create a folder in my normal user home folder as root

Maybe a bad download?
Tried redownloading?

Well, that certianly explains why you can not launch Opera.

Vass is right. Try downloading the file as a regular user.

why he only needs to change the file permissions to user instead of root....

I downloaded as my user. I can't even log in as root on this machine. Or at least it doesn't give me the option at the login screen. I SU for everything that needs root access. I don't think I want to chmod 755 /etc just yet. Not that I couldn't change it back, I suppose, but bah. This stuff should just work.

you can change it so you only bootup to run level 3, so you don't have to deal with the limitations of the GUI login screen

I can, but I forget how. It's been a while since I tinkered with this stuff. Still, why is it giving me "" instead of a user name? It should either say "avarice", my default user, or "root", right?
