CD-ROM disspears on win 2K professional Sony VAIO LAPTOP

A friends sony laptop's cd-rom drive disappeared awhile ago as she randomly rebooted. I think I could figure it out if I had access to the machine but I don't. So does anybody know exactly what's wrong? Or have a few suggestions to try to fix it so I can tell it to her over the phone?? It's a Sony VAIO and I think it's the FX series?? It's running Windows Professional 2000. Thanks so much for your help. (I read the other threads on this but they were all on windows ME, and 98 so i didn't know if that would work or not)

I know what the problem is. I have come across this before.
Let me know if this works on yours as well bud.
One of two things.

1. You either have a version of Adaptec CD burning software installed (also known as Roxio CD burning software. but its the same thing) and you have installed Nero burn as well. some times media player has Roxio as part of the package for copying music to CDs on media player. if so go to this link and follow instructions:

http://www.roxio.com/en/support/kb/ecdc/ee6000206.jhtml

(the best way to do the above without messing around is to back up all data you want to keep and format HDD and start again. DO NOT install Roxio or adaptec software aswell as Nero products as they conflict. Or if you dont want both or Nero installation do a custom setup and make sure you dont install Nero Direct CD because that is what conflicts with the other burning software)

2. If the above dont apply, you may need to take the laptop to the manufacturer (under their warranty can be expensive) it's eihter CD rom malfunctioning, or dirty or loose contacts on CD rom drive (should slide out to check), damaged bios (at worst) or a bios battery may need replacing.

Let me know if number one works if not e-mail me and I will try to help before sending it back to manufacturer.
