A way to test my internal network connection?

Brief History:
My roommate and I just finished moving into our new apartment and getting our network setup. We are using a local cable company called WMIS to provide us cable internet. We purchased the PRO package which gets us 384k / 192k. Next in line we have a Linksys BEFW11S4 router splitting the internet connection to our two main computers and both of our laptops using the wireless portion of the router.

The Problem:
We both play an MMO called Dark Age of Camelot religiously. I notice a brief spot of lag every once in a while which is expected with an MMO but my roommates connection seems to be much, much worse. It isn't uncommon for him to go link dead at least once, if not twice during a gaming session. Also in certain sections he will receive some horrible lag. Places where he could travel to with no problems before he moved.

His room is the closest one to the router/cable modem area which is in our living room. Both our cables were made by me using the standard EIA/TIA 568B standard.

I was thinking of cutting both of the ends off his cable and recrimping the end.

Right now we are both at a loss as to what the problem could be. I was hoping that someone might have an idea. Is there some type of program that could some how test the connection? I am going to take a look at our Fluke cable tester at work and see if it has some type of diagnostics for a cable.

have you upgraded to firmware for the router?

maybe check to see if you have the newest drivers for the network cards

I think it may be a cabling problem too. Or less likely, an EMI problem.

As a simple test, swap PC locations temporarily one night.
