Installing OS in DOS

Hi. I Had a problem installing my OS on my new computer, and I was hoping I could have some help. I have built everything correctly, installed bios correctly, and FDISKED + FORMATTED the hard drive. I insert the startup disk, start with cdrom support enabled, but when I try to install OS from cd, it says cannot run this in DOS. Well that's all I have is DOS right now, so how am I suppose to install it?

If it makes any difference, the startup disk I am using is from windows 98, and I am installing windows 2000 pro. Also, when I start the computer without the startup disk in, it try's to read hard drive and it says something like invalid disc, replace and retry. I know the hard drive works fine though because when I am running off of the startup disk, I can access the c: drive and copy and delete files from it.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sincerely,
Michael Cottier

Go into your bios and change your boot priority to boot from cd rom first. Then put your Win2k cd in and boot from that.

is your windows 2000 disc bootable? the installation disc should be bootable. change your boot sequence to make the cdrom the first boot device.

Windows 2k setup is not as such as DOS program so it will not run.

IIRC you can run Win2k/xp setup from dos if you use the winnt file instead of winnt32 and have smartdrv, himem etc set up.
not really worth the trouble seeing as you could get the Win2k install floppy set from:
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm
Better yet you could do as Jarred and Dax have said and change the boot order in the BIOS to boot from CDROM. Then when it says "press any key to boot from CDROM" press a key and you're in. Much faster than using floppies.
