tcp/ip hangs when trying to access notes mail

dialup connection (cellular phone)
Lotus notes works fine from lan, and from normal dialup. But when using dialup from cellular phone (high speed data, 38,4kbs down) and trying to open the inbox, it takes extended periods of time. Like 20minutes.
The time drops down dramatically when the number of posts in inbox is reduced - eg. moved to another folder.
It seems that the whole tcp/ip stack hangs for the time inbox is opening.
What's the problem here?
