CD-RW Drive Stressing

Through the last 3 years I've gone through 3 drives. My first drive was a dvd-rom drive. It 'broke' when I attempted to access the drive it would say " Drive E:/ not accessible The device is not ready." I could'nt fix it so I bought a 52x cd-rom drive. Before I installed my new 52x cd-rom drive I tried my old dvd-rom drive just to see what happened and boom it was working. Five minuites later I got the message " Drive E:/ not accessible The device is not ready." so I forgot about it and went along and installed the 52x cd-rom drive. I installed it and it worked fine for over a year until the same thing happened to it... " Drive E:/ not accessible The device is not ready." So here I go again I buy a CD-RW drive. This is my third drive. Now I've been using my CD-RW drive for everything except this is one problem. When I play my Starcraft game it works fine until I turn on the music. When I turn on the music the Drive starts spinning pretty stressfully until it begins to get hot. After about five minutes the drive is still going until I have to stop it because the game cd would burn up. Does onyone have any clue what is going on with my drives? One time before I knew that having the music on my game was stressing my drive out I left it in there for a considerable amount of time until my game cd shattered to pieces inside the drive. This situation was once on the tv show "myth busters" (i think that's what it's called) because supposedly cd-rom speeds have gotten so fast there was a myth that cd's were being shattered in drives. Well I was thinking to myself "THAT HAS HAPPENED TO ME!!" They concluded that it was highly unlikely but it was possible and all I could do was marvel and say "WHY, WHY ME GOD" I'm apparently one of a very small percentage of people who've had their cd shatter in their drive. So does anyone have any advice for me? I've already tried installing new audio drivers and even re-intalling the game but no luck. My cd-rw drive is still stressing out when I turn on the music on my Starcraft Game. Thanks for any advice

What is the speed, or CPU
Whar is the OS?.. Windows XP?
How big (wattage) is the power supply?

hey don't feel too bad i had a cd explode on me too....and it was a starcraft cd too....lol...wow that's wierd

but on to your prob...hummm...i have no idea what could be causing your problem, unless you just got some wierd luck and got three bad drives in a row(i don't think so)

give us all your specs and maybe we can help you track it down though...(these guys can just about figure out any problem with enough time and info)

luck..............

I use a Compaq Presario 5822 factory built. It runs at 500mhz with an Intel Celeron chip. I use Windows98 and I'm not sure about the wattage.
As soon as I start the music on my game options the cd begins to spin spin spin and continues to spin until the whole drive begins to heat up and would burn up the cd if I left it running. This is a very strange circumstance.

Try Nero Drive Speed, a freeware program for keeping drive speeds under control. I use it on an older machine (Celeron 700) with a 52x CD-ROM that spins too fast to be read reliably. You can set it to run in the system tray and set the speed before starting up a game or application.

Well GOD DAMN. IT WORKED! I've been playing Starcraft for a year and a half without the music and this 250kb program solved it. I've stressed for over a year with the sound on my games overclocking my drive to the point of meltdown and this Nero Speed allowed me to control the rate at which my drive would read cd's. Excellent. During this whole time I've even tried finding answers here 3 or four times but I wasn't getting many answers. I feel like giving you one of those crazy DirectTV customer hugs. Thank you. Computer knowlege has increased. THANK YOU AGAIN.!
