I need a firewall

I keep getting viruses in winxp and i will not update because it seems to mess up my pc. Norton cant seem to get rid of them so I am looking for the best possible firewall i can find. Any suggestions.

Um...a firewall will do almost nothing to stop viruses from infecting your computer. Maybe if you're more specific as to why you think you have a/many viruses...Norton is detecting them, but cannot get rid of them? Have you tried any other antivirus scanners?

AVG Antivirus FREE Edition is the best free one available IMHO.

Trend Micro FREE Online Scan will help you as well.

Zone Alarm FREE Firewall is the best free firewall in the business.

What do you mean by "it messes up my PC"?

Sygate hands down.

You can find a FREE version at the bottom of this page I recommend upgrading to the PRO version when you can.

Well, well...looks like we agree on something there Mr. Ricky!

(didn't realize Sygate offered a 100% free version)

What do you like so much better about Sygate?
The GUI?

I use Zonealarm and have no issues with it.

Well I was in a hurry when I wrote this. When I update winxp my pc just slows down in fps and programs seem to quit working. I keep getting viruses for just being online even if no browser is open. Norton tells me I have them but it cant remove them. I scan my HD and it dont find anything. I keep getting a virus thats called Gaobotxx. Theres letters before and after that but cant remember what they are. The xx is various but its usually AO. When I get this virus it wont go away and norton detects it when I scan. It infects my winnhelp file or something like that. I fisgured if I got a firewall I would just get these viruses.

Get an antivirus program, good free ones are mentioned above.

Make sure you have the lastest updates for it.

As for the firewall.......do you not currently run one at all?

If not, I would suggest getting a firewall to.

Hope you get the problem taken care of.

norton is decting them it is just not detecting them in the system scan because it cant CLEAN them so it quarantines them and are therefore not in the scan

the slowing down part is probobly ad/spyware related you should get ad-aware and spybot to get rid of them and run them often

if you dont have a firewall i would say zone alarm and if you dont want to renew your norton subscription i would get avg

PS dont know the links off the top of my head but a simple google can find them

What makes Sygate a better firewall than Zone Alarm? I'm currently using ZA Pro.
