Compaq PSU, Different From the rest
Can someone please let me now why Compaq make all there products different from the rest, this is my dilema I got a pioneer 106 DVR, and since I installed it in my compaq presario the cpu & exaust fans have failed to work, and the outcome of this is that I cant play games because my PC just over heats a crashes then I have to wait 15 mins to let it cool down, I opened my PC up to visibley inspect the fans on reboot and they did not move, so I removed them for testing, when I tested they were working, I was thinking that my new DVD drive was taking all the juice away from the fans, my PSU is 240w but not sure if thats enough, so I went out and bought a new 300w PSU, but once I stripped out the old one I noticed that the new one was to small, and when I took it back into the PC shop the owner told me that I would, 1.either have to buy a 300w PSU from compaq, I was told that this was the most ex*****ve option, or 2. buy a new empty case for £25 and strip the guts out of my compaq and rebuild it in the new case, but with the size of the compaqs products I'm not to sure, so I done a search for a compaq PSU 300w new or reconditioned, but every search I done only turned up PSUs at about £80 to £150, and that price is just to much for me, after all the PSU that I bought from the PC shop only cost me £ 17, I would really appriecate, someones experianced opinion, please, |

The Compaq motherboard is probably not a standard ATX form factor. That means you have little chance of actually fitting it in a new ATX case. You just figured out the reason why alot of people hate Compaq, but other manufacturers do this too. |

Is it under Warranty?
If you unplug the Burner, the fans start up again, right?

no unfortunatly the warranty ran out 2 month ago, and I thought the fans would start up when I put in the origanal CD-RW but they still refused to move but before I put them back in I tested them to make sure that they worked and they were working, I have been searching now for ages for a compatable PSU 300w with no luck as yet, =(

It's possible you are getting a short somewhere around your optical drive bay. Possibly a mounting screw touching something inside the drive(s). Make sure you are using short mounting screws and/or add washers to minimize the amount of the screw that protrudes inside the drive case. You can check how much clearance you have inside the case by probing the screw holes with a toothpick or some such.
. Also make sure that the drive cable is being plugged into the drive and mobo correctly - not shifted a pin or two or upside down or wrong end to mobo. And the power connector should go into the drive only one way - make sure that's correct.
. Check anything else you may have moved/changed and put it right. Does it run OK without the optical drive being in there at all?
.bh.

the fans dont wont to work with the drive that I started with now, but I now that the fans are working because I tested them to make sure, but once I took out the dvd burner to put in the cd-rw to see if everything went back to normal but still now movement from the cpu or exhaust fans, bought a new case today, because I was told it would be cheaper in the long run rather than pay x amount for compaq psu, plus I was on the phone with compaq parts today and was told the the make of my pc a compaq presario 6240EA was now dis-continued, and the thing is only 14 month old, going to take the guts out of the compaq and put in the new case and hope and pray that the mobo fits into its new home, and sell the compaq case as scrap =), but will get back to the post when I have done this to keep all of you up to date with the fans and dvd burner, Pray for me, lol
