it's a judgement call...many of the fixes in sp4 are not critical for most users, whereas sp3 did have some important additions.

generally, it is a good idea to install the latest service pack. however, i always recommend that you backup the machine before doing it...i've seen machines get BSOD's after service packs were applied. and there is some truth to the old rule, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

very peculiar timing of this thread...i just applied sp4 to my primary machine last night (like you it was also was on sp3).

[edit] reread the original post that said it was a spare machine...you probably don't need to then.

The only very bad thing I've read about SP4 is if installed on a Win2k server that is also a Citrix server. But even these bugs have been worked out now.

are you sure it was sp3 tht caused it to hang? there was a hotfix that ms released a while back that would cause machines to take a very long time to shutdown...i even had to remove it from my machine for that reason.

how long has sp3 been on that machine? if this just started a few days ago, i don't think it's a service pack problem unless you're going to tell me you installed sp3 a few days ago, too.

Hi again this is a fresh install of win2000 , which means
all service packs up to 3 have only been on machine 3 days.
Should I upgrade to service pack 4.

Thks

Get into Add/Remove Programs and look for a MS Hotfix Q329170 and uninstall it.

Cheers!
