Power Supply question for AthlonXPs

A buddy of mine swears up and down that AthlonXPs require the additional P4 plug on mobos just like P4s do. He says his system won't even boot without it hooked up on his. We both have AthlonXP 2500+ processors, but I have the Asus A7N8X Deluxe rev. 2.0 motherboard, and he has an MSI (not sure of the model).

My system is cruising along fine without it, and after a close inspection last night, I discovered that there isn't even a P4 plug on my motherboard!!

So which of us is smoking the crack here? =)

Thanks,
Kaziah

Obviously it has to do with the motherboard, not just the cpu...I mean, if you dont have a plug for it, then, lol..you cant worry about it.

All you would have to do is go to AMD's website and look up the approved motherboards and see if they ALL have the plug....I think he is on crack.

As far as I know the P4 connector (aux) is the rectanglar plug with 6 wires.
All the AMD boards that i've seen use the other square aux plug that has 4 wires.

I have an Abit NF7-S that has that connection. Mine boots up whether it's plugged in or not.

The extra plug is for the 'daul phase' power.
I think its a Tim Allen thing 'more power'

That 4 pin +12V power plug is used on some motherboards and not used on others , doesn't matter about the cpu .
Some good boards use it like the abit nf-7 , while other good boards like the Epox 8RDA+ does not , still great boards , just different motherboard power configuration design .
But , if your board has the extra 4 pin connector , by all means use it .

kaziah,
Just to clarify, My gigabyte board requires the 12v, 4pin power to be connected to the board, the manual states that the system should not boot with out it.

There are a few threads that ive seen where users neglected to plug in their 12v power and casued the ATX connector to burn up or melt, seems that for the boards that have this plug, it is intended to take some of the work load off of the atx power connector.

Those whose boards have such a connector should be using it.

Laterz,
dafanman
