To CCNA or not to CCNA

I was wondering what some of you out in the work force thought of the CCNA. I have already gone through the course material for the CCNA and I am going to take the test soon but I was wondering what the actual value of this certification is.

I am already A+, Server+, and Network+ certified and I am working toward a Degree in Computer Science or IT Management.

Any thoughts as to the value of the CCNA with the certs I already have would be much appreciated.

I have it but do not use it at all in my job. Its is a good cert anyhow since it will provide a good working base to understand how the Cisco routers and switches work. I strongly suggest that you consider MCSA at some point down the road if you are interested.

I'm going for the CCNA and maybe I'll take another look at the MCSA. I don't think the MCSA will be easy though. The CCNA is looking pretty tough. I suppose if I don't pass, I'll try the new two part exam but I'm going for it.

Thanks guys.

I passed the 607 yesterday. I highly recommend Selftest software. It is really good and is almost all I used in preparation for the CCNA.

If you take the A+, Network+, MCSA, MCSE and then CCNA, you will do much better. The reason is that this is how you advance and move up in the IT Career Field. A+ and Network + is the basis for a good desktop support person. MCSA (MOUS as well) is a good entry level admistrator or senior support person. MCSE is a must to be able to work with servers and then the networking side as an Engineer comes with the CCNA.

I have been in IT for 22 years, I will be honest, I have turned down guys coming in for interviews that started at the Cisco stuff first as they usually did not have a solid grasp of the basics. Even if you pass the Cisco certs, if you do not understand hardware, basic networking and server operations, you will never be able to get through a tough network issue because you will not understand how the rest of the environment works.

Good luck with your tests.

that makes a lot of sence, and am glad I am doing it that way.
I found that a lot of material prepares you for the next one in line too, they kinda overlap if you know what I mean.

Thank you atek. That is the kind of advice I was looking for.

Fortunately, I already have A+, Network+, Server+, and now the CCNA. I have a job working for the public schools, which is a challenging and varied environment. I am learning more from working at the schools than I have going to school.

I plan on working on an MCSA next while working toward my degree in Comp Sci. Any more advice would be greatly appreciated.
