*INCREDIBLY* annoying word bug... *please* help...

Here's the scenario...

1. I load Microsoft Word 2002 on any machine.

2. I click on File | Open.

3. I select the word doc i want to open, and click on "Open".

4. I receive this error message, and the document refuses to open:

I only seem to receive the bug when i try to open word documents that have been saved somewhere other than on that particular machine.

I've investigated this on the internet all i can, and everyone seems to suggest turning off "Embed smart tags" which doesn't make any difference, or running Word in safe mode which, again, doesn't make any difference.

As it stands, i cannot send my girlfriend any documents at home, my parents cannot send me anything, and more frustratingly, i cannot send any documents to uni for me to work on there...

Can anyone offer any guidance at all please??

i'll be sure to let you know...

i also found a MS knowledge base article on it, but apparently even though they know about the bug, i have to read Micro$not's contact details to contact them for a bug fix. There's isn't a downloadable one.

I don't know what "smart tags" are, but the MS site says a workaround is to turn them off. i tried that, but it made no difference! Why did they bother telling us to try?!? lol

Seems like the last time you opened and worked on the document in question, you were mapped to another computer where the file was located, and either the file's location has been changed, or the other PC is now mapped under a different 'alias.' Within Word, I believe there are settings for the default location when opening files... see under Tools... Options... File Locations tab, and try editing that.

Could you supply some information, such as Word Version, Windows Version, Set up of your machine (network/stand alone, network type, etc)

In addition, do you have Permissions set on the folder in question?

Also, is it possible that the documents contain linked rather than embedded information?

Try this. On another machine create the simplest word document ever. Save it, copy it to your machine and open it. Will that work?

Our school is currently blaming it on Novell and how it maps the network drives... no known fix yet

Are you also fishsponge (alias)?

Or, is this a different location exhibiting what appears to be the same problem?

nope I am not fishsponge i am in Florida @ rollins college. It seems to be a problem thanks to novell like so many other problems like Printer Queues getting jammed and having to call an admin accross campus to clear it up and it taking 3 years to login and 5 min to print when the queue isnt jammed up... oh well... its my schools fault for using it and setting it up the way they did... im sure some admins out there have it running smoothly, I just havent met one yet.
