Jonezy is on a distinguished road

Hello all,
I am thinking of buying a simple Base unit Pc:

- AMD Athlon XP2400+ CPU
- Globalwin CBK-II58 CPU Cooler
- 512MB Crucial PC2100 DDR Memory
- Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8 40GB Hard Drive
- Asus 52X CD-ROM
- 3 1/2 Inch Floppy Drive
- On-Board 2D/3D Graphics
- On-Board AC'97 Audio
- Integrated 10/100Mbps LAN
- 165W PSU

for £327 i am going to add a 128 graphics card (MSI GeForce FX 5200) and keep my old monitor, keyboard, mouse and speaker. Is this a wise choice? and what is the difference between a AMD ATHLON 'throughbread' and the normal AMD ATHLON CPU's??

Thanks

The cores that were made before the t-breds were the palominos, and before those were the t-birds. Newer cores are improvements of the old cores. Now they run on less voltage and less heat plus more efficiency with data. Bartons are the latest cores.

Your choice looks good but I'd get a burner rather than the cd-rom.

You're gonna have to do something about that PSU. A 300W would be acceptable.

i would also have to agree with those guys
get like a 2500+ barton there is no normal athalon there is
palomino t-breds thortons and bartons
if you get a barton remember to get atleast 2700 ram but most people would say 3200 because its so easy to overclock that cpu

also i am not sure if even a 300w psu would cut it i would get atleast 350 and probobly 400

as for harddrives 40gb is kindof small and a very weak bang for your buck if you look around you can get a 80-120gb for like 4-=60 amir

and that graphics card is very weak for that price that is like 600 usd and it is usually like 60...i dunno now it seems like just a typo

The newer cores also added more metal layers. Hence the tbred A isnt as good for oclocking as a tbred B is. Same except for the extra layers of metal. Big idff in the end though. Some of it (most actually) is purely fab size/changes that makes them diff. Not the architecture. Even adding more L2 doesnt change architecture of chip design-I.E. how many stages x86 code or not etc. etc.
