encoding a video to another format i.e to divx makes the video smaller to download so you dont have to spend so long downloading while keeping the same resolution

Generally encoding means the same as compressing.

//edit:
Eg. jpg/gif/png are compression formats.
If you compare the size of a bmp/tiff file, the size of the compressed file is only a fraction. You lose quality, but save size.

I'm trying to watch movies that I suppose were encoded from DVD. But all the scenes are very sloppy, meaning that it stops for a fraction of a second and after a while the screen cannot keep up with the sound and it seems as though you hear the sound before they open their mouths. Do you know what is happening? I have the codecs and I set the video card acceleration to max. Any solutions? Thanks

Your computer is too slow, your video card is too slow, your codecs are faulty, the video file is faulty.

most of the time when the sound is out of sink it means they did a very fast encode. DivX files are prone to get out of sync if its a long file and they only do an encoding with 1 pass.

do you have an onboard sound card? Your processor may not be able to handle decoding the information and process the sound all at the same time. If you have a 3d sound card make sure all settings in players and in the control pannle are set for full hardware sound acceleration so your sound card does the work and not your CPU when it dosnt have to.

its not an onboard sound card. After the board was changed, the problems started.

do a google search for the Kazaa lite kodec pack. It has tons and tons of codecs . Just about every major one you could ever need. It dosnt put kazaa on your computer and a search using ad aware after installing it didnt turn up any spy ware either.
