I had a problem with my Athlon XP 1700 only running at 1.0G, very siliar to your problem. I changed the ram frequancy in bios and on boot up in told me it was running right, but the computer would freeze up after about 5 secconds ( sometimes less, was a pain to get into the BIOS again and change settings ) . .
After changing around and troubleshooting what I felt was everything, I had a stick of 512 SDRAM and a stick of 256 . .
well pulling out one of the sticks solved the problem . .
It wasnt a bad stick of ram, becuase either or would work, and it wasnt the slot, becuase once again, either stick in either slot would work . .
I dont know if the MB didnt like having to different sized chips, or if it just didnt like 2 sticks of SDRAM or what. I upgraded that computer and got 2 sticks of 512 DDR, and it worked.
Hope this helps.
