HP Pavilion XE744 Video Card Help
I have hit a snag and could really use some help.
My dilimma:
I have an HP Pavilion XE744 Desktop computer running Windows ME. It is currently using the internal Intel 82810 graphics controller. I want to install an aftermarket graphics card (Radeon 7500) and I'm having problems with this procedure.
I am using the following four (4) step procedure from HP:
Step 1: Uninstall/Disable the i810 and i815 chip set
Before beginning make sure that the new video card is not installed in the computer. If it is, remove it and its drivers per the video card manufacturer's suggestions. Reinstall the i810 and i815 video drivers and make sure they function. This will ensure that all i810 and i815 video driver files can be found, removed, disabled, and that a clean installation of the new video card drivers is performed.
1. Turn on or restart the computer.
2. At the blue HP screen, press the F8 key repeatedly until a start
menu screen opens.
3. Select the number for Safe Mode, and press Enter. It may take a while for the safe mode version of Windows Desktop to open.
4. Right-click My Computer and select Properties.
5. Click the Device Manager tab.
6. Click the plus (+) sign next to Display Adapters.
7. Select an 82810 or 82815 graphics controller under Display Adapters and click Remove, and then click OK to confirm.
8. Continue removing the graphic controllers until all controllers are removed.
9. After removing all graphic controllers, close all windows, and
restart the computer.
10. At the blue HP screen, press the F1 key repeatedly until the Bios Setup screen opens.
11. At the setup screen, press F5, then press Enter to reset all data to default settings.
12. Press F10, then Enter to save and exit.
13. When Windows opens it will detect and install the video card.
Allow the installation to complete and the system to open to Windows. The i810 or i815 chipset is now installed correctly, the
next step is to change the settings to use a standard driver.
Step 2: Change to a standard video driver
The following steps will replace the i810 and i815 video drivers with standard video drivers:
1. Right-click My Computer and select Properties.
2. Click the Device Manager tab.
3. Click the plus (+) sign next to the listing for Display Adapters.
4. Double-click the graphics controller under Display Adapters. A
Properties window should open.
5. Select the Driver tab and click Update Drivers. A Driver Update
Wizard window should open.
6. Click Next on the window that pops up.
7. Select Display a List of All Drivers and click Next.
8. Select the Show All Hardware option. Select Standard Display Types from the top of the Manufacturers window. Select Standard Display Adapter (VGA) and click Next. Do not restart the computer when asked to do so.
9. Click Start, Settings, and then Control Panel.
10. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon in the Control Panel.
11. Locate any listing for the i810 and i815 chipset and double-click the Add/Remove button to remove it from the system.
12. Close all windows, and restart the computer when done.
Step 3: Disabling the standard video drivers
Use the following steps to disable the standard driver.
1. Click Start, Settings, and then Control Panel.
2. Double-click the System icon.
3. Click the plus (+) sign next to the Display Adapter category to
expand it.
4. Double-click Standard Display Adapter (VGA) to open the Properties window.
5. Remove the check mark next to Exists in all hardware profiles.
6. Click OK and close all windows.
7. Turn off the computer and install the new video card per the
manufacturer's instructions.
Step 4: Install the new video card and drivers
Use the following steps to disable the standard driver.
1. Turn off the HP Pavilion by selecting Start, Shut Down, and Shut Down.
2. Install the new video card and software using the instructions that came with the video card.
I successfully complete Step 1. I run into problems in Step 2 (Changing to a Standard Video Driver). I make it down to item seven (7) in Step 2 and I can't get any farther. I'm suppose to get a "Display a List of All Drivers" option and be able to click next. I never get that prompt. Instead it takes me to a Driver Update Wizard and gives me the following messsage:
Windows was unable to locate an updated driver for this device.
You are using the best driver for this device.
What would you like to do?
o Continue using the current driver (recommended)
Intel(r) 82810 Graphics Controller 4.12.01.2576
o Install one of the other drivers
I can't seem to reset this to a standard video driver. This is preventing me from completing Step 2 and moving to Step 3.
Any help woul dbe greatly appreciated. I searched this forum for related items and came up empty.
Thanks in advance for your help!
