Resource Conflict

I built this computer a week ago,and had a terrible time with the ONboard AC97 sound. It shows that it is working, but nothing comes out the speakers. All the volume sliders are turned up.And when I plug in my game controller,it gives an error page and restarts.
So I disabled the onboard sound, and installed an old ESS SOlo 1 card that I had,and all was well until today. Now it has a Resource Conflict
I pulled the sound card, and it works fine. This thing just doesn't want to play music I guess.

Is it possible to have the thing work for a week before it has a conflict?I haven't installed anything else.It just got all freaky and quit.

Good guesses welcome

HP PAvilion 7800
Duron 850
128 PC133
Windows XP Pro.
ESS Solo 1
Modem
GeForce 4 128mb AGP

Sorry for the long post, but this is driving me nutso

TIA

update

I put the soundcard back in a different slot and it's working.

For now anyway.

Is this board just getting flaky?

Do you also have an onboard nic? Sometimes there are weird conflicts between onbaord sound and onboard nics. I have had to play around with uninstalling them and installing one or the other first to get them both to work.

Do you have the serial ports and parallel ports disabled in the bios? Check and see because thats a good way to free up some resources.

The first thing I do before even installing windows is to go into the bios and disable the serial ports and the parallel port....that gives you plenty of free irq's to play with
