Does it give you any error or does it start to look up on the web for a codec?
It is likely you don't have any codecs installed to play the video.
You could try and find ACE Mega CoDecS Pack, or kazaalite codec pack, or nimo codec pack, all work great, i'm thinking that is why your not able to play the video file.
You need a codec for playback of media files, there are many types and the built in xp ones wont play all that many, so you will be better off getting a codec pack.

are you using a firewall such as zonealarm ( www.zonelabs.com )?
try allowing wmp9 to access the internet if you are firewalled.

it has something to do with the http configuration. i came home and called him and had him check all the buttons that i have checked under tools/options/network. then at least he could play a video on ms mplayers website. but he still cant play a video from a link in a post in the community here at TIMO.

we have the same ISP. charterpipeline. and the same os.
