How do you auto shutdown?

I just did a clean install of win xp prof on another machine. Prior to running windows updates, including sp1, the computer would shut down along with turning the monitor off. After the update, it only gives me a message that it is safe to shut down. What am I missing here? Not familiar enough with xp. Thanks.

Send a message via Yahoo to stant093
dont quote me if im completley wrong but i believe it has to do with the power supply....you can run a monitor off the power supply if it has two jacks, its a chain link of a sort...

edit:well if you didnt swap power supplies, im not sure, i havent messed with XP enough...

I miss stated myself I think. I don't mean to turn the monitor off, just the computer off completely. When I shut down now it is still running though the message says its ok to shut down.

look here http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;310117

this is an article telling about the OPPOSITE problem from what you have

it is telling how to STOP the computer from auto shutting down ....so check it out and do the OPPOSITE from what it says, lol

Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Power Options.
Click on the APM tab.
Uncheck the Enable Advanced Power Management Support box.

so probably you would make sure the apm box is CHECKED

hehe....I have to give em props at least on their website...you can learn a LOT from msofts website.

And with a problem occuring RIGHT AFTER after a SP update etc its a no brainer that there will probably be something on the knowledge base about it.

Weird though that the problem would even occur in the first place...as if ANY of us wants to do a 2 step shutdown like in the old days
